The Hong Kong government has revived the offer of talks with pro-democracy protesters, but has vowed to press on with its efforts to clear the streets.
CY Leung, the territory’s chief executive, said on Thursday afternoon that the government hoped to “start and maintain a dialogue as soon as possible” with the Hong Kong Federation of Students, one of the groups leading a civil disobedience campaign now into its 20th day. Talks could come as early as next week, he added.
“The most constructive thing that the Hong Kong government can offer the students is to sit down and listen,” Mr Leung said at a press briefing. “Politics is the art of the possible, and we have to draw a line between possibilities and impossibilities.”
