Can I make more money working for myself?

Corporate cost cutting has fuelled a rise in high-skilled professionals taking the freelance route. The move can be highly rewarding — but it is risky

When Fabio Caravita told his family he was quitting his well-paid job at Deloitte to branch out on his own, they thought he was mad.

“[I had] a great salary, great car, great benefits . . . They thought: why would I put myself in London with no job?”

But Caravita, now 40, was confident he could succeed on his own, working as an independent consultant for large insurers. His vision was not only to match the full-time salary he’d left behind, but to have greater freedom to travel, choose his hours and be selective about his clients.
