Travis Kalanick has resigned as chief executive of Uber after pressure from investors, ending eight years of leading the ride-hailing company that has expanded round the globe but became mired in controversies.
Mr Kalanick’s resignation comes after big shareholders demanded that he step down on Tuesday and his move will clear the way for Uber to hire a new chief executive.
Mr Kalanick confirmed his departure in a statement: “I love Uber more than anything in the world and at this difficult moment in my personal life I have accepted the investors’ request to step aside so that Uber can go back to building rather than be distracted with another fight.”
