Clearing the air Peugeot to retest cars in ‘real world’

has pledged to test its cars for emissions and fuel efficiency under real-world conditions and publish the results, in an effort to restore consumer confidence in diesel following the Volkswagen scandal, writes Michael Stothard in Paris.

Europe’s second-largest carmaker by sales said that it was committed to “maintaining its customers’ trust”. It would hire a third party to conduct the tests. European carmakers have stepped up efforts to restore the reputation of diesel amid fears the VW scandal will speed up the decline of a fuel source already under pressure. Peugeot has invested heavily in diesel, due in part to government subsidies. Today, it derives 60 per cent of European sales and 40 per cent of global sales from diesel cars.
