Turkey lifts YouTube ban

Turkey has lifted its ban on YouTube after more than two months after blocking access to the video-sharing site – even as the government redoubles its criticism of the international media.

Tuesday’s move to lift the block on the site was not the result of a policy shift by the government of Recep Tayyip Erdogan, prime minister, but instead followed a ruling against the ban last week by Turkey’s constitutional court – against which there is no appeal.

In a speech to ruling party MPs, Mr Erdogan maintained his fiercely combative stance towards the international media by suggesting that a CNN correspondent, who was recently detained and manhandled by the Turkish police while broadcasting live, was a foreign agent.
