Obama vows to pursue Palestinian state in ‘new beginning' between US and Islam

Barack Obama promised a “new beginning” in relations between the US and the Muslim world, vowing to fight negative stereotypes of Islam and personally pursue the establishment of a Palestinian state alongside Israel.

In a speech in Cairo that acknowledged US failings in the Middle East, the US president called on both sides to seek common ground and fight extremism.

Interrupted by frequent applause, Mr Obama seemed to have mesmerised his selected audience of 3,500. Some Arab commentators compared the symbolic significance of the speech with Richard Nixon's opening to China.
