Poland unveils €1.3tn claim against Germany for wartime reparations

Parliamentary report demands recompense for second world war occupation, killings and destruction

Poland has unveiled a long-awaited parliamentary report claiming Germany owes it 6.2tn zlotys (€1.3tn) in reparations for the damage and losses the country suffered during the second world war.

The report, released on the anniversary of the day Nazi Germany launched its attack on Poland in 1939 and triggered the global conflict, is the latest attempt by the rightwing government in Warsaw to obtain reparations from Berlin, a demand German politicians have repeatedly rejected.

The report comes at a time of diplomatic strain between Berlin and Warsaw, most recently over Polish complaints that the German government had backtracked on pledges to provide military support to Kyiv following Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
