Emily Gregory, a small-business owner who focused her special election campaign on battling rising costs in Trump’s backyard, defeated Jon Maples, the Republican candidate whom the president had enthusiastically endorsed.
The result in a district that had backed Trump by 11 percentage points in the 2024 election will fuel concerns among Republicans about their prospects in the November midterms and raise hopes among Democrats that the political winds have shifted in their favour.
