OpenAI will shutter its video generation model Sora and drop a $1bn agreement with Disney less than four months after the two companies agreed what was hailed as a groundbreaking licensing agreement.
Sam Altman’s AI start-up on Tuesday announced it would discontinue the Sora video app, launched last September, to focus its computing resources on other priorities, such as robotics.
The tie-up between Disney and OpenAI was viewed as a big step for both companies, which would have allowed Mickey Mouse, Luke Skywalker and 200 other characters to appear within Sora. Altman at the time said demand for Disney’s characters on the platform was “off the charts”.
