Leading science groups have warned that the UK government’s plans to cut funding for physics research and laboratories will damage innovation and hobble Sir Keir Starmer’s efforts to boost growth.
The Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC) faces a potential 30 per cent cut in funding to its work in particle physics, astronomy and nuclear physics, according to a letter from the council’s chair.
The planned cuts come as UK Research and Innovation, the umbrella funding body, pushes through a strategic shift to spend more on government priority sectors such as life sciences. The agency plans to increase finance for areas such as video games and AI by up to 100 per cent.
