Climate urgency means action bypassing COP is necessary, says COP30 boss

Entrenched positions and consensus nature of UN climate talks slow down progress, says Corrêa do Lago

Entrenched positions at the annual UN climate summit were slowing the world’s ability to curb rising temperatures, the head of COP30 said, and there was a growing need to circumvent the official negotiations.

André Corrêa do Lago, COP30 president and veteran diplomat for Brazil, said the achievements of the UN climate summits over three decades, and the landmark Paris agreement, were “fantastic” and remained important.

But the warmest year on record last year and repeated disasters from floods to fires, meant there was a need for more urgent action. The consensus nature of the talks “slow down action”, he said.
