Millions of low-skilled jobs under threat from shifting UK labour market

Study finds demand for staff in sectors such as sales and customer service has fallen faster than expected, in part due to AI

Up to 3mn UK jobs could disappear by 2035 in lower-skilled areas such as sales, customer service and administration, according to new research that shows the pace of change in the labour market is accelerating.

The analysis by the National Foundation for Educational Research, which has been tracking the changes since 2020, found that although the overall number of jobs in the economy was set to grow, this was more likely to be in professional and managerial roles.

Lower-skilled roles have been disappearing faster than the NFER previously expected. Employment in sales and customer service occupations has fallen more than 10 per cent since 2021, while blue-collar employment in plant and machine operation is down 5 per cent.
