US justice department launches criminal probe into Fed’s Lisa Cook

Investigation marks an escalation in Trump administration’s efforts to remove the central bank governor

The US Department of Justice has opened a criminal investigation into Federal Reserve governor Lisa Cook, according to a person familiar with the matter, in an escalation of the Trump administration’s attempts to remove her from the board of the central bank.

The DoJ launched the probe after federal housing director Bill Pulte, an ally of Donald Trump, last month submitted a criminal referral alleging Cook had “falsified bank documents and property records to acquire more favourable loan terms, potentially committing mortgage fraud”.

The accusations were linked to mortgages for properties in Ann Arbor, Michigan, and Atlanta, Georgia.
