Lengthy security checks disrupting UK research, universities warn

Delays in vetting process for international students is deterring top scientific talent, Russell Group finds

Lengthy security checks for international students and staff are dissuading top scientific talent from coming to the UK and jeopardising research projects, universities have warned.

Overseas staff and students in a range of science subjects that could have national security implications are required to obtain security vetting from the Academic Technology Approval Scheme (ATAS) to work in the UK.

However, the time the process takes is stalling research projects, prompting some researchers to withdraw from jobs altogether and some businesses to drop investment, according to the Russell Group of research intensive universities.
