EU and China to commit themselves to showing joint leadership on climate

Effort is being made to galvanise support for a rare area of mutual agreement amid geopolitical tensions

China and the EU are expected to publish a joint statement committing the two regions to more ambitious plans for cutting emissions ahead of the UN COP30 summit in Brazil, in an effort to galvanise action on climate amid geopolitical tensions

The statement will be announced by the EU and Chinese leadership after a summit in Beijing on Thursday. It will say that the two regions will commit themselves to “demonstrate leadership” on climate matters and uphold the 2015 Paris agreement, according to EU officials and diplomats.

It will also say that Brussels and Beijing will submit ambitious emissions reduction targets for 2035 “covering all economic sectors and all greenhouse gases” in line with the Paris accord, the officials said. This reiterates a statement made by President Xi Jinping in April.
