The NHS in England may “break” before it can meet standards expected by patients, according to a highly critical report by the UK public spending watchdog that casts doubt on the health service’s financial sustainability.
The National Audit Office on Tuesday said the scale of the challenge facing the NHS was “unprecedented” and that there was a potential “growing mismatch” between demand for services and future funding.
The report said that in the year 2023-24 “many NHS bodies failed to break even” and that in future the health service would be put under even further pressure by an ageing population.
