Chinese carmaker BYD cuts production over pollution claims

Authorities open investigation into claims that emissions from factory are harming local residents

BYD, China’s second-largest car marker, has curbed production at one of its biggest plants after authorities opened an investigation into claims that pollution from the factory is harming local residents.

The Changsha plant in the central Chinese province of Hunan has in recent days faced protests from nearby residents who have accused the plant of polluting the local environment, with some claiming it had caused nosebleeds in children.

The plant, which produces one of BYD’s most popular hybrid models, has halted some production lines since late on Sunday, the state-run newspaper Securities Times reported on Tuesday.
