US imposes sanctions on companies controlled by Myanmar’s military

Washington adds more entities to blacklist as it piles pressure on coup leaders

The US has imposed sanctions on two companies it said was controlled by Myanmar’s military in the latest attempt to squeeze the finances of the junta in the wake of a coup that toppled Aung San Suu Kyi.

The Treasury department on Thursday added to its blacklist Myanmar Economic Holdings Limited and Myanmar Economic Corporation, which it described as controlling “significant segments of the country’s economy”.

“The United States stands with the people of Burma and urges a return to its democratically elected government,” said Andrea Gacki, the director of the Office of Foreign Assets Control, which oversees sanctions in the US Treasury.
