Trump and Macron clash as Nato leaders gather

Presidents Donald Trump and Emmanuel Macron clashed over Syria, Turkey and the future of Nato hours before what threatens to be a fractious 70th anniversary summit of the western alliance.

Turkey’s president Recep Tayyip Erdogan, another important Nato member, added his own jabs as he vowed to block a plan for boosting the defence of Baltic nations against Russia, unless fellow member states formally recognise the Kurdish YPG militia who fought alongside US special forces in Syria as a terrorist group.

The disagreements have turned a leaders’ gathering meant to celebrate the postwar alliance’s durability and mark the UK’s continued international relevance after Brexit into a diplomatic minefield.
