China stocks climb after Beijing confirms Liu to visit Washington

China stocks bounced higher in afternoon trading after Beijing said Liu He, Chinese vice-premier will visit Washington for the eleventh round of trade talks, following days of uncertainty.

The commerce ministry said in a statement that Mr Liu will travel to Washington from May 9 to 10 for talks with his US counterparts, easing concerns following an escalation of trade tensions between the US and China.

Mr Liu’s planned visit to Washington this week was put in doubt after US President Donald Trump threatened to increase tariffs on Chinese goods from Friday. US officials had accused China of backtracking on pledges made in talks to end the trade war.
