Foreign investors cool on Chinese stocks

A rush by foreign investors into Chinese stocks slowed last month, casting doubt on whether the market can sustain a world-beating run.

After pouring almost $18bn into Chinese equities in the first two months of the year, international investors held back in March, according to analysis from BNP Paribas. While China’s benchmark index still climbed more than 5 per cent last month, that was less than half its appreciation in February.

Hopes for a resolution to the trade stand-off between Beijing and Washington helped turbocharge Chinese stocks in January and February, but the lack of progress since then has cut the appeal of the market, analysts say.
