Lighthizer and Mnuchin resume trade talks in Beijing

Formal US China trade talks resumed in Beijing on Friday as officials warned a final trade agreement could “take months” to conclude.

A US delegation led by Robert Lighthizer, the US trade representative, is scheduled to be in the Chinese capital for only about 24 hours for meetings with Liu He, Beijing’s top trade negotiator. In previous negotiating rounds this year, the two men have generally met for at least two full days.

Speaking to reporters on Friday morning, Steven Mnuchin, the US Treasury secretary, said the two sides had a “very productive” working dinner on Thursday night before resuming discussions at the Diaoyutai State Guesthouse in central Beijing.
