Lawyers for Meng Wanzhou, the chief financial officer of Chinese telecoms group Huawei, said they had “serious concerns” about the political nature of her detention in Vancouver, as they gear up to fight her extradition to the US.
At a hearing on Wednesday, defence lawyer Richard Peck cited comments by US President Donald Trump to highlight what he said were “serious concerns” about the “political character” and “political motivation” behind her arrest and detention at a Vancouver airport in December.
Ms Meng, daughter of Huawei founder Ren Zhengfei, was in court for the brief hearing, where Judge Heather Holmes set a date of May 8 for her next appearance.
