China condemns ‘absurd lies’ about detained Uighur musician

China’s foreign ministry denied Turkey’s allegation that a famous Uighur Muslim musician had died in detention, calling the statement “absurd lies” after state media released a video purporting to be of the musician.

A Turkish official said Ankara’s statement appeared to have forced the hand of Beijing, but added that Turkey was unsure whether the video was real or not.

“The video was released after our statement,” the official told the Financial Times. “Before that, we had no idea what had happened to this person. They didn’t even tell us if he was alive or not.”
