Canada’s ambassador granted access to detained Michael Spavor

Canada’s ambassador to China was granted access to Michael Spavor on Sunday, one of two Canadians detained last week by Beijing for alleged “activities harmful to national security”.

Canada’s foreign ministry said ambassador John McCallum had met with Mr Spavor on Sunday, without giving further details. Mr  Spavor, a prominent expert on North Korea, was due to travel to South Korea from his home in northern China last Monday but did not arrive.

The detention of the Canadians came after Beijing warned of “serious consequences” for Ottawa following the  arrest of Meng Wanzhou, chief financial officer of Huawei, on December 1.
