China has detained a former Canadian diplomat, according to two people with knowledge of the situation, days after Beijing threatened Ottawa with “serious consequences” over the arrest of a top executive at telecom equipment provider Huawei.
Michael Kovrig, a senior adviser for non-profit policy research organisation the International Crisis Group, was first secretary at Canada’s embassy in Beijing from 2014 to 2016. Mr Kovrig’s detention was first reported by Reuters yesterday.
ICG confirmed that Mr Kovrig had been “detained on Monday night in Beijing by the Beijing Bureau of Chinese State Security”, adding that it was seeking his “prompt and safe release”.
