The French government yesterday suspended planned fuel tax increases in a bid to defuse violent protests by the so-called gilets jaunes movement that have shaken the authority of Emmanuel Macron, the president.
Edouard Philippe, prime minister, announced a six-month moratorium on the tax rises, scheduled for January 1, after meeting governing party MPs.
“These decisions must ease tensions and bring back serenity to the country,” Mr Philippe said in a televised address. “No tax deserves to endanger the unity of the nation.”
