Jack Ma, the founder of Alibaba, is stepping aside at a time when the company has never looked stronger. Alibaba now has the highest market value among Chinese technology companies. By contrast, many of Mr Ma’s rivals in that bitterly competitive sector look vulnerable.
Tencent, JD.com, Didi, and Baidu are all facing challenges.
Mr Ma, who just turned 54, is the first of his generation to begin to distance himself from the empire he created. He had already demonstrated his determination to make Alibaba an institution that “can cross three centuries”.
