中美贸易战

China can bear more trade pain than America

Trade wars, such as the one that US president Donald Trump appears to be stoking with China, are bad for all the warring parties. Consumers will ultimately pay a higher price for everything they buy.

Blocking imports is unlikely to bring production home. Apple may move its iPhone assembly from China to Thailand, rather than to the US. If the US bans imports of all foreign-made iPhones, American consumers would suffer from skyrocketing prices.

The US is certainly a more open economy than China. But the real issue behind the tit-for-tat between Washington and Beijing is whether China has lived up to its World Trade Organization obligations.
