Donald Trump will dispatch a team of his top economic officials to China next week to discuss Washington’s fraying trade relations with Beijing, as the two sides threaten to impose further tariffs on each other’s products.
The president said the trip will be led by policymakers including Steven Mnuchin, Treasury secretary, and Robert Lighthizer, US trade representative.
Mr Trump said during meetings with French President Emmanuel Macron that there was a “very good chance of making a deal”, but he vowed to continue with plans to impose new tariffs on Chinese imports if no progress was made.
