China’s former internet tsar Lu Wei faces graft probe

China’s former internet tsar is being investigated for suspected corruption, more than a year after he left the online regulator.

In a brief statement posted on its website on Tuesday night, the Communist party’s anti-graft watchdog said Lu Wei was suspected of “serious violations of discipline”. 

During his time as the first head of the Cyberspace Administration of China, Mr Lu was a strident defender of “internet sovereignty” and the party censorship regime that blocks access to popular social media platforms such as Twitter and Facebook, as well many global media organisations.
