India and China have agreed to disengage their troops in a diplomatic end to a tense two-month-old Himalayan border stand-off that had raised fears of potential conflict between the two large Asian neighbours.
In a brief, two-sentence statement, the Indian ministry of external affairs said that “expeditious disengagement of border personnel at the face-off site at Doklam has been agreed to and is on-going.”
Hundreds of border personnel from India and China have been confronting each other since mid-June on territory claimed by both China and the tiny Himalayan kingdom of Bhutan – India’s close ally.
