A US fighter jet shot down a Syrian warplane over the jihadi-held province of Raqqa on Sunday, thought to be the first time the US-led alliance has downed an Assad regime aircraft during the war against Isis.
The incident highlights the potential of the war to spark a dangerous internationalised conflict between the rival forces intervening to fight the jihadi group on Syrian soil.
Also on Sunday, Iran’s Revolutionary Guards launched surface-to-surface missiles against Isis in eastern Syria in retaliation for the recent attacks by the jihadi group on the country’s parliament and a shrine.
