China’s premier seeks to cool trade tensions with US

China does not want a trade war with the US and will not devalue the renminbi to boost exports, the country’s premier said on Thursday, as he struck a conciliatory note ahead of a series of high-level bilateral meetings. 

Li Keqiang was speaking hours after Robert Lighthizer, President Donald Trump’s nominee for US trade representative, said China would be one of his major challenges, requiring a “multi-faceted” approach to combat its alleged trade abuses. 

“We don’t want to see a trade war between China and the US,” Mr Li told reporters at the close of China’s annual parliamentary session. “That wouldn’t make our trade fairer.”
