Theresa May prepares for her trip to Washington

Theresa May said yesterday she would be “very frank” with Donald Trump when she becomes the first world leader to meet the new US president this week.

The prime minister said British-US co-operation on terrorism and Nato would be on the agenda at Friday’s meeting in Washington — as well as lobbying Mr Trump for a quick post-Brexit trade deal between the UK and the US as she seeks to reinforce the two countries’ “special relationship”.

Mr Trump has called Brexit “a great thing” and said last week that the US could strike a trade deal with the UK “very quickly”. He has also expressed scepticism about the EU’s future, saying that Britain will not be the only country to leave. However, Mrs May said she would urge Mr Trump not to undermine European unity.
