Hillary Clinton makes history as first female presidential nominee

Hillary Clinton has been crowned as the Democratic presidential nominee, making history as the first woman to be picked by a major political party to run for the White House, and firing the gun on a fierce battle with Donald Trump, the Republican nominee.

The victory came eight years after Mrs Clinton was beaten by Barack Obama, a relatively inexperienced senator from Illinois, who came back from behind to defeat the woman who had the backing of the majority of the Democratic establishment.

Mrs Clinton secured her place in history the night after Michelle Obama, the wife of the president, urged supporters of Mr Sanders and Mrs Clinton to come together to ensure that a Democrat would enter the White House instead of Mr Trump.
