North Korea has successfully conducted its first hydrogen bomb test, according to state TV, in a move likely to bring further diplomatic isolation and tougher international sanctions to the impoverished communist state.
Pyongyang detonated the bomb at Punggye-ri, North Korea’s main nuclear testing site, state TV said on Wednesday after South Korean officials detected an unusual seismic activity of a 5.1 magnitude.
The state TV said the country had successfully detonated a miniaturised hydrogen nuclear device in a “national epoch-making event,” which will equip the country with “the strongest nuclear deterrence capability and help it secure its rights for survival against threats from the US and other countries.”
