China taxi-hailing app offers carpooling service to win friends

Didi Kuaidi, the most popular taxi-hailing app in China, has launched a carpooling service that is likely to direct passengers away from both its own service and Uber, which has been making a big push in the country.

The Chinese company, which was created this year by the merger of taxi apps by Alibaba and Tencent, said it would not make money from the Shun Feng Che service, which started yesterday.

Shun Feng Che — which roughly translates as Fair Wind Car — was being offered for free, Didi Kuaidi said, to “relieve the ‘pain point’ of urban traffic during rush hour, providing a public good and promoting green travel”.
