Chinese President Xi Jinping has slammed student-led democracy protests in Hong Kong as “illegal”, in his harshest comments yet on the extended demonstrations.
Mr Xi was speaking in a joint press conference with US President Barack Obama in Beijing on Wednesday in which he warned “foreign countries” to stop interfering in Hong Kong affairs.
In turn, Mr Obama said he had assured the Chinese president that the US had “no involvement in fostering the protest that took place [in Hong Kong]”.
