Ebola has arrived in the US's biggest city after a test indicated that a doctor in New York City who recently returned from west Africa had the virus.
On Thursday evening, Bill de Blasio, New York’s mayor, confirmed the case in a 33-year-old physician who had worked for Médecins Sans Frontières, the global aid agency, in an Ebola treatment centre in Guinea.
The patient was transferred to Bellevue Hospital earlier in the day with a fever and gastrointestinal symptoms and placed in an isolation unit, according to the hospital.By the evening a test had come back positive for Ebola.
