Passenger fatalities in air accidents are at their highest level since 2010, swelled by the disappearance of Malaysia Airlines flight MH370 and the apparent shooting down of the same airline’s MH17.
Three fatal air accidents since Thursday last week, when MH17 crashed, have sparked fears that aviation safety is being compromised in some way.
But the trend in aviation is towards further improvements in air safety, with fatal passenger accidents happening at an average of less than one per month now compared to one per week in the early 1950s, according to Ascend, an aviation consultancy. The number of passenger fatalities has been on a broad downward trajectory since 1970, although there have been significant spikes in some years.
