China hunkers down in Iraq despite Sunni militant onslaught

China said it had no plans to evacuate its citizens from Iraq, where it is the country’s biggest investor, even as other countries and companies move out non-essential personnel in the face of the militant Sunni insurgency.

The militant Sunni group known as Isis that controls much of western Iraq and eastern Syria on Wednesday attacked an oil refinery in the north of the country, as the embattled government mobilised troops and allied Shia militia to stem their advance.

Chinese oil companies operate in the south and southeast of Iraq, which is still under government control, and in Kurdish-controlled areas in the north.
