US captures suspected ringleader of attack on Benghazi consulate

The US said on Tuesday it had captured the suspected ringleader of the 2012 attack on its consulate in Benghazi in which four Americans died and which ignited a partisan political clash in Washington that is still raging.

The Pentagon said US military personnel had detained Ahmed Abu Khatallah in Libya and that he was now in US custody outside the country. There were no civilian casualties during the arrest, US officials said.

Eric Holder, the US attorney-general, said Abu Khatallah would face charges in a US court rather than being sent to the Guantánamo Bay military jail. He faces three charges, including killing a person during an attack on a federal facility and supporting terrorists. Mr Holder said more charges could be brought.
