Chinese exports, imports fall sharply

In what could be a further sign of broad-based weakness in the Chinese economy, the nation's exports fell 6.6 per cent in March versus a year ago. Imports declined a similarly worrying 11.3 per cent.

This is the second month in a row that Chinese exports have dropped, though they fell by a much larger 18.1 per cent in February.

That left China with a small trade surplus on the month of $7bn, rebounding from its $23bn deficit a month earlier.
