Jet hunt teams fail to find debris

Hopes of finding missing Malaysia Airlines flight 370 on the first day of a new search, after satellites detected possible aircraft debris in the Indian Ocean, have been dented.

Four surveillance aircraft failed to turn up any sign of the airliner.

US, Australian and New Zealand aircraft yesterday flew 2,500km southwest from Perth to an area where satellites had spotted two objects, including one estimated to be 24m long. Hishammuddin Hussein, the Malaysian transport minister who has become the public face of the search for the Boeing 777 that disappeared with 239 crew and passengers almost two weeks ago, said the images were “credible”. But he stressed it was premature to conclude that the objects were part of the aircraft.
