Putin approves draft bill for Russia to annex Crimea

President Vladimir Putin on Tuesday signed a treaty to include Crimea as part of the Russian Federation less than 48 hours after the southern peninsula voted to be part of Russia.

But during an hour-long speech to the upper and lower houses of the Russian parliament, and attended by Crimean officials, Mr Putin said he had no intention of taking any other regions of Ukraine.

At the end of the speech Mr Putin signed into law an agreement with the new Crimean prime minsiter, the speaker of the regional parliament and the recently appointed mayor of the Black Sea port of Sevastopol to admit them into the Russian Federation.
