Turkey’s political crisis deepened yesterday as the prime minister lashed out at a “treacherous” tape-recording purportedly of him and his son discussing how to conceal the family’s wealth from corruption investigators.
Recep Tayyip Erdogan said the recording was fake but the allegations still shook markets, with the leading index on the Borsa Istanbul stock exchange closing down 3 per cent. The lira fell sharply against the dollar before partly recovering.
Mr Erdogan said the recording – apparently of him and his son Bilal discussing how to hide large amounts of money from a corruption probe – was a result of “editing” and “dubbing”.
