A Chinese campaign against prostitution that started in the city of Dongguan has spread across Guangdong province, despite an outpouring of public support for sex workers.
State media yesterday said the clampdown had already targeted more than 18,000 entertainment venues in the province. More than 200 saunas and other establishments have been shut down in operations that have resulted in the detention of almost 1,000 people.
The “exterminate yellow” campaign – the Chinese term for crackdowns on illicit sex – has been widely ridiculed on Weibo, China’s version of Twitter, prompting the authorities to step up their censorship of posts on social media.
