In 38 years at Marubeni, one of Japan’s largest conglomerates, Michihiko Ota has had one stint outside Asia, in Belgium.
With such postings it is perhaps unsurprising that, aged 60, he moved to Singapore from Tokyo seven months ago to take charge of a sweeping arc of the Asian map, from India in the west through Southeast Asia up to South Korea.
Mr Ota’s move is notable for two reasons: it is a beefed-up role from that held by his predecessor, and it comes as Japan is tilting politically and economically towards Southeast Asia as a counterweight to China.
