State-sponsored Chinese hackers broke into the computer systems of five European governments ahead of the G20 summit in September, according to research from California-based cybersecurity company FireEye.
The report does not name the targets but, according to a source familiar with the investigation, they include the foreign ministries of Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Latvia and Portugal.
The security breaches appear to be the latest sign of an escalating struggle between China and the US for global dominance in cyberintelligence, following the scandal about surveillance by the US National Security Agency.
